QUESTIONS ABOUT ASSISTED LIVING | THE COST

Increasingly common among Assisted Living Facilities is the point model where the resident pays a set fee for each point or service received. Similar to the point model is a time model where the tenant is billed for each fifteen minute interval of service. The Point Model almost always starts with a base rate covering rent, meals, weekly housekeeping and activities and points are added for each service received.

PROS
  • The consumer pays only for the services received. As needs change and services are increased or decreased the price you pay is adjusted monthly or quarterly.he consumer pays only for the services received. As needs change and services are increased or decreased the price you pay is adjusted monthly or quarterly.
  • The consumer can see each month exactly what services they are paying for and monitor the care provided.

CONS

  • The resident may pay differing amounts every month making it difficult to budget for services received.
  • There may be a tendency for facility management to provide more services than a resident actually needs.
  • The base rate is often a marketing tool. By publishing a low base rate consumers can be mislead about the total cost of living at the facility. Assisted Living Facilities exist to provide personal care services and almost no one actually pays the base rate.
