QUESTIONS ABOUT ASSISTED LIVING | THE COST

While becoming increasingly rare there are still some facilities that use a single rate for all tenants. This fee structure is found most often in small facilities, e.g. adult foster care providers, but a few larger facilities use it as well.

PROS
  • You know exactly how much you are going to pay no matter what services you receive. You may see fee increases each year but the increase will be the same for all.
  • For those who have high service needs the single rate fee structure may be your best choice, because those who have less care needs will be subsidizing your care.
  • This fee structure is easy to budget for and it is easy to figure out whether or not you can afford the care over the long run.

CONS

  • Residents with moderate or low care needs will usually pay more in single rate facility. Rates are usually based upon average care needs with the result that low and moderate need residents are helping to pay for those with higher care needs.
  • There may be a tendency by management to limit the care they provide. With a single rate a facility cannot raise their rates to cover the costs of providing a great deal of care, consequently they may try to evict people with high care needs.
